Today would have been the 113th birthday of Jimmy Murphy, the man credited with “keeping Manchester United going” in the immediate aftermath of the Munich Air Crash. With Sir Matt Busby lying injured in a Munich hospital, Jimmy Murphy temporarily took over as Manchester United Manager, steering the club through its greatest crisis. Under his leadership, United reached the FA Cup Final in 1958 where they lost 2-0 to Bolton.

As a child I used to spend as much time as possible watching the teams train and watching an and b games. One bitterly cold morning he invited me and my mate into the changing rooms where he gave us a cup of tea and had a long chat .
